The Tsankov Kamak Dam in Bulgaria equipted with 200 monitoring instruments
In early 2008, Geokon,Inc.’s Canadian division, GKM Consultants, was awarded a major contract to provide the instrumentation system for the Tsankov Kamak Dam in Bulgaria. Geokon, Inc./GKM Consultants were serving as a sub-contractor to Alpine Bau GmbH, the primary civil contractor
The Tsankov Kamak Dam is located in southwestern Bulgaria and feeds two units of 40 MW capacity turbine generators. It is situated on the Vacha River downstream (north) of the town of Devin. It is a part of the DospatVacha cascade development of the Vacha River involving five dams and power stations within the Devin municipality. Constructions was finished in 2011. It’s designed as concrete arch dam, with double curvature and a height of 130 m. Its length at crest is 468 m, volume content is 465,000 m³ and reservoir cross capacity is 110,900,000 m³.
ROLE OF VDV
Vista Data Vision was installed onsite and is used to monitor readings from all instruments installed. Relevant data and information may be viewed as graphs, tables and Real Time Displays. This approach made it easy for the Site Engineer and Site Operators to monitor the dam’s behavior. The same information is also accessible via the Internet using the VDV web interface. GKM Consultants handled the instrumentation and data logging system. VDV staff configured the VDV layouts, visualization and all its functions. Once the data logging system was working the VDV configuration for handling data from the entire project only took few days. One of the benefits of the VDV solution is that the TK Dam’s instrumentation data is not only easily available for the TK Dam’s staff but also for the Area Management who is responsible for operation of
all the dams in the area.
